Aatu Kari Kuzhambu (chettinad Mutton Curry)
Aatu Kari Kuzhambu, also known as Chettinad Mutton Curry, is a traditional South Indian dish from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. This spicy and flavorful curry is made with tender mutton pieces cooked in a rich, aromatic gravy that is perfect to be enjoyed with steamed rice or roti.
Ingredients
- 500g mutton, cut into pieces
- 1 cup finely chopped onions
- 1 cup tomato puree
- 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1/4 cup Chettinad masala powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and sauté the chopped onions until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Now, add the mutton pieces and sauté until they are well browned.
- Stir in the tomato puree, Chettinad masala powder, turmeric powder, green chilies, and curry leaves. Cook for a few minutes.
- Pour in the coconut milk and add salt to taste. Mix well and bring the curry to a gentle simmer.
- Cover the pan and let the mutton cook in the flavorful gravy for about 45-50 minutes, or until tender.
- Once the mutton is cooked, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
