Baklava is a popular dessert in Balkan cuisine, and this Albanian Baklava Surprise recipe adds a unique twist to the traditional version. Layers of flaky phyllo pastry, chopped nuts, and sweet syrup come together to create a delicious and indulgent treat that is perfect for special occasions or as a sweet ending to a meal.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 2 cups of mixed chopped nuts (such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios)
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, honey, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
- Place a sheet of phyllo pastry in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle a layer of mixed nuts over the phyllo pastry.
- Place another sheet of phyllo pastry on top of the nuts, brush with butter, and repeat the process until all the nuts are used, ending with a top layer of phyllo pastry. Brush the top layer with butter.
- Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
- Remove from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava. Allow to cool completely before serving.
