Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
  • 2 cups of mixed chopped nuts (such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios)
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, honey, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.
  3. Place a sheet of phyllo pastry in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
  4. Sprinkle a layer of mixed nuts over the phyllo pastry.
  5. Place another sheet of phyllo pastry on top of the nuts, brush with butter, and repeat the process until all the nuts are used, ending with a top layer of phyllo pastry. Brush the top layer with butter.
  6. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. Remove from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava. Allow to cool completely before serving.
