Albanian Lamb Stew (Tavë Kosi me Mish Viçi)
Tavë Kosi me Mish Viçi is a traditional Albanian lamb stew that is rich in flavor and perfect for a hearty meal. This dish is a staple in Kosovan cuisine and is loved for its tender lamb and creamy yogurt topping.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs lamb, cut into chunks
- 1 cup rice
- 2 cups plain yogurt
- 3 eggs
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the lamb chunks and brown them on all sides. Remove the lamb from the pot and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the butter, onion, and garlic. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion and garlic, and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Return the lamb to the pot. Add the dried oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Pour enough water to cover the lamb, then bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1.5 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the rice according to the package instructions.
- In a bowl, whisk together the yogurt and eggs until smooth.
- Once the lamb is tender, transfer it to a baking dish. Spread the cooked rice evenly over the lamb.
- Pour the yogurt and egg mixture over the rice and lamb.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
