Albanian Walnut and Honey Baklava (Bakllava me Arra dhe Mjaltë)
Bakllava me Arra dhe Mjaltë, or Albanian Walnut and Honey Baklava, is a traditional dessert from the Arbëreshë cuisine, known for its rich flavors and delicate layers of phyllo pastry.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 3 cups of walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon and sugar.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Sprinkle 1/3 of the walnut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
- Repeat the layers of phyllo pastry and walnuts two more times.
- Top with 10 more layers of phyllo pastry, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, combine the water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Once the baklava is done, immediately pour the hot honey mixture over the hot baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
