Albanian Walnut and Honey Baklava (Bakllava me Arra dhe Mjaltë)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
  • 3 cups of walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon and sugar.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  5. Sprinkle 1/3 of the walnut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
  6. Repeat the layers of phyllo pastry and walnuts two more times.
  7. Top with 10 more layers of phyllo pastry, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While the baklava is baking, combine the water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  11. Once the baklava is done, immediately pour the hot honey mixture over the hot baklava.
  12. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
