Algerian Chicken and Chickpea Stew (Djedj B'leblab)
Djedj B'leblab is a traditional Algerian chicken and chickpea stew that is bursting with flavor and warmth. This hearty dish is perfect for a cozy family meal or for entertaining guests.
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 4 cups chicken broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
- Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, paprika, turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chicken pieces to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes and chickpeas, then pour in the chicken broth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the stew to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve the Djedj B'leblab hot, garnished with chopped cilantro.
