Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope. Shape the ropes into pretzel twists.
- In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place them on a baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake the pretzels in a preheated oven at 450°F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving.
