Amish Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic.
  3. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope. Shape the ropes into pretzel twists.
  4. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place them on a baking sheet.
  5. Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  6. Bake the pretzels in a preheated oven at 450°F for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving.
