Anpan (hokkaido Milk Bread With Sweet Red Bean Paste)
Anpan is a traditional Ainu sweet bread filled with sweet red bean paste. This recipe combines the soft and fluffy texture of Hokkaido milk bread with the sweet and earthy flavor of red bean paste, creating a delightful treat that is perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 4 cups bread flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup Hokkaido milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup sweet red bean paste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the Hokkaido milk and water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- Add the softened butter to the dough and knead for 10-15 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball.
- Flatten each dough ball and place a spoonful of sweet red bean paste in the center. Pinch the edges to seal the filling inside the dough.
- Place the filled dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the anpan for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
