Apfelstrudel (austrian Apple Strudel)
Apfelstrudel, or Austrian Apple Strudel, is a classic Central European dessert that features a flaky pastry filled with spiced apples, raisins, and nuts. This delicious treat is perfect for any occasion and is sure to impress your friends and family.
Ingredients
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 8 sheets phyllo dough
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
- Place one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
- Repeat with the remaining phyllo sheets, stacking each one on top of the other and brushing with butter and sprinkling with breadcrumbs.
- Spoon the apple filling along one long edge of the phyllo stack, leaving a border on the sides. Fold the short edges over the filling, then roll up the strudel from the long edge, using the parchment paper to help lift and roll.
- Place the strudel, seam side down, on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top with any remaining melted butter.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let the strudel cool for 10 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar. Slice and serve warm.
