Apple and Walnut Cake (Plăcintă cu Mere și Nucă)

Ingredients

  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 package of store-bought puff pastry sheets
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, chopped walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well to coat the apples and walnuts evenly.
  3. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Spoon half of the apple and walnut mixture onto the pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
  5. Drizzle half of the melted butter over the apple mixture.
  6. Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the apple mixture. Press the edges to seal.
  7. Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg to create a golden crust.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  9. Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
