Apple and Walnut Cake (Plăcintă cu Mere și Nucă)
Plăcintă cu Mere și Nucă, also known as Apple and Walnut Cake, is a traditional Romanian dessert that is perfect for any occasion. This delicious cake is made with layers of flaky pastry filled with a sweet and tangy apple and walnut mixture.
Ingredients
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 package of store-bought puff pastry sheets
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, chopped walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well to coat the apples and walnuts evenly.
- Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Spoon half of the apple and walnut mixture onto the pastry, leaving a border around the edges.
- Drizzle half of the melted butter over the apple mixture.
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the apple mixture. Press the edges to seal.
- Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg to create a golden crust.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
