Arctic Char Chowder (Nieriäkeitto)
Nieriäkeitto, or Arctic Char Chowder, is a traditional dish from the Sami cuisine, featuring the delicate flavors of Arctic char and root vegetables in a creamy broth.
Ingredients
- 500g Arctic char fillets, cut into chunks
- 3 large potatoes, diced
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 4 cups fish or vegetable broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and celery, and sauté until softened.
- Add the potatoes, carrots, and broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
- Add the Arctic char chunks to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
- Pour in the heavy cream and stir gently to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the Nieriäkeitto hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
