Arsik (coconut Milk Stewed Chicken)
Arsik is a traditional Batak dish from Indonesia, known for its rich and flavorful coconut milk stewed chicken. This dish is a perfect combination of savory and creamy flavors, making it a favorite in Batak cuisine.
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 cups coconut milk
- 4 shallots, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 red chilies, sliced
- 1 inch galangal, sliced
- 1 stalk lemongrass, bruised
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 3 cups water
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the shallots, garlic, and red chilies. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until they are browned on all sides.
- Pour in the coconut milk and water. Add the tomatoes, galangal, lemongrass, turmeric powder, salt, and sugar. Stir well to combine.
- Cover the pot and let the chicken simmer for 45-50 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Remove the lemongrass stalk before serving.
