Ashgabat Cevizli Baklava is a traditional Turkmen dessert that is rich in flavor and history. This sweet and nutty pastry is a perfect way to end a meal or enjoy with a cup of tea.

Ashgabat Cevizli Baklava (ashgabat Walnut Baklava)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 2 cups of walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  5. Sprinkle a layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. Repeat the layering process with 4 more sheets of phyllo dough and the walnut mixture.
  7. Finish with 8 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While the baklava is baking, combine the water and honey in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15 minutes, then let it cool.
  11. Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey syrup over the hot baklava.
  12. Allow the baklava to cool before serving.
