Bahraini Date and Walnut Cake (Ma'amoul)
Ma'amoul is a traditional Bahraini date and walnut cake that is popular during festive occasions and celebrations. It is a delicious sweet treat that combines the natural sweetness of dates with the crunch of walnuts, all wrapped in a tender, buttery cake.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
- Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking pan.
- Sprinkle the chopped dates and walnuts over the batter.
- Spread the remaining batter over the date and walnut layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the ma'amoul to cool in the pan before cutting into squares and serving.
