Bajan Beef Patties

Bajan Beef Patties are a popular snack in Barbadian cuisine, featuring a flavorful beef filling encased in a flaky pastry crust.

Bajan Beef Patties

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and butter. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Add the cold water and mix until a dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, thyme, curry powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface and cut out circles using a round cutter.
  5. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture onto one half of each dough circle, then fold the other half over to enclose the filling. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  6. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
