Gebackene Käseknödel, or Baked Cheese Dumplings, are a traditional dish from Lower Saxon cuisine that is both hearty and delicious. These dumplings are made with a mixture of bread, cheese, and eggs, then baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- 4 cups stale bread, cubed
- 1 cup grated cheese
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup chopped chives
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the bread, cheese, eggs, milk, chives, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Form the mixture into 8 dumplings and roll them in flour.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Brown the dumplings on all sides, then transfer them to a baking dish.
- Bake the dumplings for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
