Baked Macaroni (imqarrun Il-forn)
Baked Macaroni, known as Imqarrun il-Forn in Maltese cuisine, is a delicious and comforting pasta dish that is perfect for family gatherings and special occasions.
Ingredients
- 500g macaroni
- 500ml milk
- 50g butter
- 50g all-purpose flour
- 200g grated cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions, then drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add the milk to the butter and flour mixture, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in 150g of the grated cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
- Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, then transfer to a baking dish.
- Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of the macaroni.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
