Baklava is a delicious and rich dessert made with layers of phyllo pastry, chopped nuts, and sweet syrup. This traditional Cypriot dessert is a perfect combination of crispy, flaky pastry and sweet, nutty filling.

Baklava Bliss

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
  • 2 cups of mixed chopped nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds)
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Place a sheet of phyllo pastry in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
  6. Layer 8 more sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with butter, and sprinkle with the nut mixture.
  7. Repeat the layering process with the remaining phyllo sheets and nut mixture, ending with 8 sheets of phyllo on top, each brushed with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden and crisp.
  10. While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  11. When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
