Baklava Bliss
Baklava is a delicious and rich dessert made with layers of phyllo pastry, chopped nuts, and sweet syrup. This traditional Cypriot dessert is a perfect combination of crispy, flaky pastry and sweet, nutty filling.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 2 cups of mixed chopped nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds)
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Place a sheet of phyllo pastry in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
- Layer 8 more sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with butter, and sprinkle with the nut mixture.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining phyllo sheets and nut mixture, ending with 8 sheets of phyllo on top, each brushed with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden and crisp.
- While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
