Baklava (flaky Walnut Baklava)
Baklava is a delicious and flaky dessert that is popular in Tajik cuisine. This sweet treat is made with layers of phyllo pastry, chopped walnuts, and a sweet syrup, creating a delightful combination of textures and flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry sheets
- 3 cups of chopped walnuts
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon.
- Layer the phyllo pastry sheets, brushing each sheet with melted butter as you layer.
- Sprinkle a layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo pastry.
- Continue layering the phyllo pastry and walnut mixture until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo pastry.
- Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the baklava is golden and crisp.
- While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Once the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
