Baklava (sweet Almond Baklava)
Baklava is a delicious sweet pastry that is popular in Azerbaijani cuisine. It is made with layers of phyllo dough, filled with sweet almond mixture, and then soaked in a fragrant honey syrup.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 2 cups of almonds, finely chopped
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix together the chopped almonds, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup of sugar.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle 1/3 of the almond mixture over the phyllo.
- Add 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, and sprinkle with another 1/3 of the almond mixture.
- Repeat with 4 more sheets of phyllo, butter, and the remaining almond mixture.
- Add 8 more sheets of phyllo on top, brushing each with butter.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining 1/2 cup of sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
- When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
