Baklava (sweet Honey Baklava)

Baklava is a delicious sweet pastry that is popular in Tajik cuisine. It is made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and sweet honey syrup.

Baklava (sweet Honey Baklava)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 cup of chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pistachios)
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon.
  3. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  4. Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  5. Repeat the layers of phyllo and nuts until all the nut mixture is used, ending with a top layer of phyllo dough.
  6. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. While the baklava is baking, make the honey syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  9. When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
