Baklava (walnut Baklava)

Baklava, a traditional Armenian dessert, is a rich and sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo dough, filled with chopped walnuts, and sweetened with honey or syrup.

Baklava (walnut Baklava)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 2 cups of chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts with cinnamon and 1/4 cup of sugar.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets.
  5. Sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons of the walnut mixture over the phyllo layer.
  6. Continue layering phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter and sprinkling with the walnut mixture, until all the walnut mixture is used.
  7. Finish with 8-10 layers of phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining 3/4 cup of sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  11. When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
  12. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
