Baklawa (algerian Almond And Honey Pastry Rolls)
Baklawa is a traditional Algerian pastry made with layers of flaky phyllo dough, filled with a sweet and nutty almond mixture, and soaked in honey syrup. This delicious dessert is a staple in Algerian cuisine and is often enjoyed during special occasions and celebrations.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 2 cups of almonds, finely chopped
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of rose water (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the chopped almonds, cinnamon, and 1/2 cup of sugar.
- Brush a sheet of phyllo dough with melted butter, then sprinkle with the almond mixture. Repeat with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough, stacking them on top of each other.
- Roll the stacked phyllo dough into a log, then cut it into 4 equal pieces.
- Repeat the process with the remaining phyllo dough and almond mixture.
- Place the pastry rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the pastry rolls are baking, prepare the honey syrup by combining the remaining sugar, water, honey, and rose water in a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Once the pastry rolls are done, pour the honey syrup over them while they are still hot. Allow the rolls to soak up the syrup for at least 1 hour before serving.
