Bakllava Me Arra (kosovan Walnut Baklava)
Bakllava me Arra, or Kosovan Walnut Baklava, is a traditional dessert from Kosovo that features layers of flaky pastry filled with a sweet walnut mixture and soaked in a fragrant syrup.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 3 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon.
- Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Sprinkle a layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Repeat the layers of phyllo dough and walnut mixture until all the ingredients are used, ending with a top layer of phyllo dough.
- Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the baklava is baking, combine the water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Once the baklava is done, immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
