Balinese Green Bean Salad, also known as Lawar Buncis, is a traditional dish from the beautiful island of Bali. This refreshing salad is packed with flavor and texture, making it a perfect side dish or light meal.

Balinese Green Bean Salad (lawar Buncis)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 4 shallots, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 red chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp shrimp paste
  • 1 tsp palm sugar
  • 1 tsp tamarind paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup fried shallots, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  2. In a pan, dry roast the grated coconut over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, sauté the shallots, garlic, and chilies until fragrant.
  4. Add the shrimp paste, palm sugar, and tamarind paste to the pan, then stir in the water. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  5. Add the blanched green beans to the pan and toss to coat them with the spice mixture.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the roasted coconut.
  7. Transfer the salad to a serving dish and garnish with fried shallots.
