Balinese Green Bean Salad (lawar Buncis)
Balinese Green Bean Salad, also known as Lawar Buncis, is a traditional dish from the beautiful island of Bali. This refreshing salad is packed with flavor and texture, making it a perfect side dish or light meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 cup fresh grated coconut
- 4 shallots, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 red chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp shrimp paste
- 1 tsp palm sugar
- 1 tsp tamarind paste
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup fried shallots, for garnish
Instructions
- Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a pan, dry roast the grated coconut over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, sauté the shallots, garlic, and chilies until fragrant.
- Add the shrimp paste, palm sugar, and tamarind paste to the pan, then stir in the water. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- Add the blanched green beans to the pan and toss to coat them with the spice mixture.
- Remove from heat and stir in the roasted coconut.
- Transfer the salad to a serving dish and garnish with fried shallots.
