Balinese Spicy Shrimp Satay (sate Plecing Udang)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 3 shallots, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 red chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp shrimp paste
  • 1 tsp palm sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, blend the shallots, garlic, red chilies, shrimp paste, palm sugar, and salt to make a smooth spice paste.
  2. Marinate the shrimp with the spice paste, tamarind paste, and vegetable oil for 15 minutes.
  3. Thread the marinated shrimp onto the bamboo skewers.
  4. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the shrimp skewers for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are cooked through and slightly charred.
  5. Serve the Balinese Spicy Shrimp Satay hot with steamed rice and sambal matah.
