Balkan Burek With Cheese And Spinach
Balkan Burek with Cheese and Spinach is a traditional Montenegrin pastry dish that is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack. This savory pie is made with layers of flaky phyllo dough filled with a delicious mixture of cheese and spinach.
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo dough
- 1 pound of fresh spinach, chopped
- 1 cup of feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 cup of ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg, beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the chopped spinach, feta cheese, ricotta cheese, and beaten egg. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Unroll the phyllo dough and place one sheet on a clean, dry surface. Brush the sheet with melted butter and place another sheet on top. Repeat this process until you have 6 layers of phyllo dough.
- Spread the spinach and cheese mixture evenly over the layered phyllo dough.
- Roll the layered phyllo dough and filling into a log shape, then coil it into a spiral and place it in a greased baking dish.
- Brush the top of the burek with more melted butter.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the burek is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
