Balkan Burek with Cheese and Spinach is a traditional Montenegrin pastry dish that is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack. This savory pie is made with layers of flaky phyllo dough filled with a delicious mixture of cheese and spinach.

Balkan Burek With Cheese And Spinach

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 pound of fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 cup of feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 cup of ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the chopped spinach, feta cheese, ricotta cheese, and beaten egg. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Unroll the phyllo dough and place one sheet on a clean, dry surface. Brush the sheet with melted butter and place another sheet on top. Repeat this process until you have 6 layers of phyllo dough.
  4. Spread the spinach and cheese mixture evenly over the layered phyllo dough.
  5. Roll the layered phyllo dough and filling into a log shape, then coil it into a spiral and place it in a greased baking dish.
  6. Brush the top of the burek with more melted butter.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the burek is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
