Ingredients

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the red lentils and place them in a pot with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil and add the cumin seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add the chopped onion and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and coriander powder to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil separates from the mixture.
  4. Pour the tomato mixture into the pot of cooked lentils. Add salt to taste and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes.
  5. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
