Balochi Machli Ka Salan (traditional Balochi Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish (pomfret or any firm-fleshed fish)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add more oil if needed and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  4. Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and green chilies. Cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Now add tomato puree, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates.
  6. Whisk the yogurt and add it to the masala. Cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Add the fried fish and simmer for 10 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  8. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot with steamed rice or naan.
