Balochi Murgh Pulao (spicy Balochi Chicken Pilaf)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati rice
  • 500g chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a large pot and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add the chicken pieces and cook until they are no longer pink.
  4. Stir in the garlic, ginger, and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Add the yogurt, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Stir gently to mix with the chicken and spices.
  7. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
  8. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
