Baltic Herring and Potato Casserole (Räime ja kartulivorm)
This traditional Estonian dish, Räime ja kartulivorm, is a delicious Baltic herring and potato casserole that is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 500g Baltic herring fillets
- 1kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 3 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
- 200ml sour cream
- 50g butter, melted
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish.
- Top with half of the sliced onions and half of the herring fillets.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, and herring.
- Arrange the sliced hard-boiled eggs on top.
- In a bowl, mix the sour cream with melted butter, salt, and pepper. Pour this mixture over the casserole.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden brown.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
