Baltic Herring Pie (Baltijos silkės pyragas)
Baltijos silkės pyragas, or Baltic Herring Pie, is a traditional dish from Baltic cuisines that combines the rich flavors of herring with a savory pie crust. This hearty and flavorful pie is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 500g Baltic herring fillets
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 4 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
- 300g potatoes, boiled and mashed
- 200g sour cream
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 500g pie crust dough
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Layer half of the sliced onions in the bottom of a greased pie dish.
- Arrange half of the herring fillets on top of the onions, then layer half of the sliced eggs on top of the herring.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining onions, herring, and eggs.
- In a bowl, mix together the mashed potatoes, sour cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Spread this mixture over the layers in the pie dish.
- Roll out the pie crust dough and place it over the pie dish, sealing the edges. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Let the pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
