Banja Luka Bean Soup (Banjalučka Pasulj)
Banjalučka Pasulj, or Banja Luka Bean Soup, is a traditional Bosnian dish that is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for a comforting meal. This recipe combines beans, smoked meats, and a variety of vegetables to create a delicious and satisfying soup.
Ingredients
- 1 lb dried white beans
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 smoked ham hock
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the dried white beans and soak them in water overnight.
- In a large pot, sauté the chopped onion, diced carrots, and diced celery until they begin to soften.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Drain the soaked beans and add them to the pot along with the chicken or vegetable broth, smoked ham hock, and bay leaf.
- Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 2 hours, or until the beans are tender.
- Once the beans are cooked, remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat, then return it to the soup.
- Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the Banjalučka Pasulj hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
