Baozi (crispy Manchu Dumplings)
Baozi, also known as Crispy Manchu Dumplings, are a popular dish in Manchu cuisine. These dumplings are filled with a savory mixture and then pan-fried to achieve a crispy texture on the bottom.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup minced pork
- 1/2 cup finely chopped cabbage
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and water to form a dough. Knead the dough for 5 minutes, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- In another bowl, combine the minced pork, cabbage, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and black pepper to make the filling.
- Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a thin circle. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each circle, then fold and pleat the edges to seal the dumplings.
- Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Place the dumplings in the pan and cook until the bottoms are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add water to the pan, cover, and steam the dumplings for 8-10 minutes until the filling is cooked through.
- Uncover the pan and continue cooking until all the water has evaporated and the bottoms are crispy again.
- Remove the dumplings from the pan and serve hot.
