Basal Mahshi is a traditional Qatari dish consisting of onions stuffed with spiced rice and lamb. This flavorful and aromatic dish is a favorite among locals and is often served during special occasions and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 4 large onions
- 1 cup of rice
- 250g ground lamb
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cut the tops off the onions and carefully remove the inner layers, leaving the outer layers intact to create a shell.
- In a bowl, mix the rice, ground lamb, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
- Stuff the onion shells with the rice and lamb mixture.
- Place the stuffed onions in a deep pot, drizzle with olive oil, and pour the broth over them.
- Cover the pot and cook on the stovetop over medium heat for 1 hour, or until the onions are tender and the rice is cooked.
- Serve the Basal Mahshi hot and enjoy!
