Bavarian Leberkäse (Leberkäse)
Leberkäse, also known as Bavarian Leberkäse, is a traditional Central European meatloaf that is popular in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Despite its name, Leberkäse does not actually contain liver or cheese. It is a flavorful and hearty dish that is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Ingredients
- 500g ground pork
- 250g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 eggs
- 100g breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp ground marjoram
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 cup ice-cold water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground pork, ground beef, chopped onion, eggs, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, marjoram, ginger, nutmeg, and ice-cold water until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture into a greased loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 70°C (160°F).
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
