Bavarian Mushroom and Potato Gratin (Bayrischer Pilz- und Kartoffelgratin)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 lb mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup grated Emmental cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until softened.
  5. Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they release their liquid and become golden brown.
  6. Season the mushroom mixture with salt and pepper, then spread it over the layer of potatoes in the baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle half of the grated cheese over the mushrooms.
  8. Layer the remaining sliced potatoes on top of the cheese.
  9. Pour the heavy cream over the potatoes, then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  10. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  12. Let the gratin rest for a few minutes before serving.
