Beijing Style Braised Tofu (红烧豆腐)

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small piece of ginger, sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed, then sauté the garlic, ginger, and green onions until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Stir to combine.
  5. Add the fried tofu back into the pan, then pour in the vegetable broth. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
  7. Stir in the cornstarch mixture to thicken the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  8. Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with additional green onions, if desired.
