Belgian Beer-Battered Fish and Chips (Poisson et Frites à la Bière Belge)
Poisson et Frites à la Bière Belge, or Belgian Beer-Battered Fish and Chips, is a classic Belgian dish that combines crispy beer-battered fish with golden fries. This recipe is perfect for a cozy night in or as a crowd-pleasing dish for a casual gathering.
Ingredients
- 4 fillets of white fish (such as cod or haddock)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup Belgian beer
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into fries
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Salt for seasoning
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Dip each fish fillet into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully lower it into the hot oil. Fry the fish until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- While the fish is frying, pat the potato fries dry with a paper towel. Fry the potato fries in the hot oil until golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
- Serve the beer-battered fish and fries hot, with your choice of tartar sauce, malt vinegar, or lemon wedges.
