Belgian Endive and Ham Gratin (Gratin d'Endives et Jambon Belge)

Ingredients

  • 4 Belgian endives, halved lengthwise
  • 8 slices of Belgian ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the endive halves in a large pot of boiling salted water and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside to cool.
  3. Wrap each endive half with a slice of ham and place them in a greased baking dish.
  4. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk and continue cooking until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Pour the sauce over the endives and ham in the baking dish. Sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese on top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the gratin is golden and bubbly.
