Belgian Endive Gratin (Gratin d'Endives Belge)
Gratin d'Endives Belge, or Belgian Endive Gratin, is a classic dish from Belgian cuisine that combines the slightly bitter flavor of endives with a creamy and cheesy gratin topping. This dish is perfect for a cozy dinner or as a side dish for a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 4 Belgian endives, trimmed and halved lengthwise
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Steam the endives for 10 minutes, then drain and place them in a greased baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in half of the grated Gruyère cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
- Pour the sauce over the endives in the baking dish, then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the gratin is golden and bubbly.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
