Belizean Panades
Belizean Panades are a popular street food in Belize, made with a savory corn dough and filled with a flavorful meat mixture. They are then deep-fried to golden perfection, resulting in a delicious and satisfying snack.
Ingredients
- 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
- 1 cup water
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the masa harina with water to form a smooth dough. Set aside.
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the onion, bell pepper, tomatoes, and garlic. Season with cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until the meat is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- Take a small portion of the masa harina dough and flatten it into a circle on a piece of plastic wrap. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of the dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
- In a deep skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the panades in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- Serve the Belizean panades hot with your favorite hot sauce or salsa.
