Belizean Shrimp Panades

Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the masa harina with water to form a smooth dough. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the shrimp, onion, garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to coat the shrimp evenly.
  3. Take a small portion of the masa harina dough and flatten it into a circle on a piece of plastic wrap. Place a spoonful of the shrimp mixture in the center of the dough circle.
  4. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the panades until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove the panades from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve the Belizean Shrimp Panades hot and enjoy!
