Bengal Gram Cake Curry (dhokar Dalna Extravaganza)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Bengal gram flour
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 tablespoons mustard oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix Bengal gram flour, turmeric powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, ginger paste, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of mustard oil. Gradually add water to make a smooth batter.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased plate and steam for 15-20 minutes. Once done, let it cool and then cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
  3. Heat the remaining mustard oil in a pan and fry the Bengal gram cakes until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
  4. In the same pan, add cumin seeds, bay leaves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté for a minute, then add the diced potatoes and cook until they are slightly tender.
  5. Add the chopped tomato, garam masala, green chilies, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil separates.
  6. Gently place the fried Bengal gram cakes into the curry, cover, and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or paratha.
