Bengal Gram Cake Curry (dhokar Dalna Extravaganza)
Bengal Gram Cake Curry, also known as Dhokar Dalna, is a traditional Bengali delicacy that combines the richness of Bengal gram cakes with a flavorful curry. This dish is a perfect blend of textures and tastes, making it a popular choice for special occasions and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Bengal gram flour
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt to taste
- 4 tablespoons mustard oil
- 2 cups water
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1 large tomato, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix Bengal gram flour, turmeric powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, ginger paste, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of mustard oil. Gradually add water to make a smooth batter.
- Pour the batter into a greased plate and steam for 15-20 minutes. Once done, let it cool and then cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
- Heat the remaining mustard oil in a pan and fry the Bengal gram cakes until golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
- In the same pan, add cumin seeds, bay leaves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté for a minute, then add the diced potatoes and cook until they are slightly tender.
- Add the chopped tomato, garam masala, green chilies, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil separates.
- Gently place the fried Bengal gram cakes into the curry, cover, and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or paratha.
