Ingredients

  • 500g white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
  • 1 cup fish or vegetable stock
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for a dairy-free version)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1kg potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup milk (or dairy-free milk)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Place the fish fillets in a single layer in a baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the onion until softened.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in the stock and cream until the sauce is smooth and thickened.
  6. Season the sauce with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  7. Pour the sauce over the fish in the baking dish.
  8. Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water until tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk.
  9. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the fish and sauce, spreading it out evenly.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
