Bergen-style Fish Pie
Bergen-style Fish Pie is a traditional Norwegian dish that combines flaky white fish, creamy sauce, and mashed potatoes for a comforting and hearty meal.
Ingredients
- 500g white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version)
- 1 cup fish or vegetable stock
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for a dairy-free version)
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1kg potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup milk (or dairy-free milk)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Place the fish fillets in a single layer in a baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the onion until softened.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the stock and cream until the sauce is smooth and thickened.
- Season the sauce with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the sauce over the fish in the baking dish.
- Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water until tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the fish and sauce, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
