Bhojpuri Style Chickpea Curry (bhojpuri Chana Masala)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, pureed
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the masala.
  5. Add the soaked chickpeas and mix well. Pour in enough water to cover the chickpeas and bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 30-35 minutes or until the chickpeas are tender.
  7. Sprinkle garam masala and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves before serving.
