Bhutanese Spiced Rice (juma)
Bhutanese Spiced Rice, also known as Juma, is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish that is a staple in Bhutanese cuisine. This dish is infused with a blend of spices that give it a unique and delicious flavor.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 3 1/2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 whole cloves
- 4 cardamom pods
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, and cardamom pods. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- Stir in the turmeric and salt, then add the drained rice. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and remove the whole spices before serving.
