Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 3 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, and cardamom pods. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  4. Stir in the turmeric and salt, then add the drained rice. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
  5. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
  6. Fluff the rice with a fork and remove the whole spices before serving.
