Ingredients

  • 1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the masoor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  3. In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dry red chilies. Sauté until the seeds crackle.
  4. Add the chopped onions, green chili, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Pour the cooked dal into the pan and mix well. Add water to adjust the consistency if needed.
  7. Simmer the dal for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning as per taste.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
