Bihari-style Masoor Dal (बिहारी-स्टाइल मसूर दाल)
This Bihari-style Masoor Dal is a traditional dish from the state of Bihar in India. It is a simple yet flavorful red lentil curry that is perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, slit
- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 2-3 dry red chilies
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the masoor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a pressure cooker, combine the dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
- In a separate pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dry red chilies. Sauté until the seeds crackle.
- Add the chopped onions, green chili, ginger, and garlic. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
- Pour the cooked dal into the pan and mix well. Add water to adjust the consistency if needed.
- Simmer the dal for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust the seasoning as per taste.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
