Bihari-style Masoor Dal Makhani (बिहारी-स्टाइल मसूर दाल मखनी)
This Bihari-style Masoor Dal Makhani is a delicious and nutritious dish that is popular in the Bihari cuisine. It is a flavorful lentil curry made with red lentils and a rich, creamy tomato-based sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the masoor dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, tomatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Add 3 cups of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
- Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and mash the dal mixture slightly.
- Stir in the heavy cream and simmer for 5 minutes.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee and add it to the dal mixture. Simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti.
