Black Chickpea Curry (kadala Curry)
Black Chickpea Curry, also known as Kadala Curry, is a popular dish from Kerala Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with black chickpeas cooked in a spiced coconut gravy, making it a perfect accompaniment for rice, appam, or puttu.
Ingredients
- 2 cups black chickpeas, soaked overnight
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1-inch ginger, grated
- 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-2 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1 cup thick coconut milk
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
- Add chopped onions, ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Now add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook for a minute.
- Add the soaked black chickpeas and mix well. Pour in enough water to cover the chickpeas and add salt.
- Cover and cook until the chickpeas are tender.
- Once the chickpeas are cooked, add thick coconut milk and simmer for a few minutes.
- Adjust the seasoning and remove from heat.
- Serve hot with rice, appam, or puttu.
