Black Chickpea Curry, also known as Kadala Curry, is a popular dish from Kerala Cuisine. This flavorful and aromatic curry is made with black chickpeas cooked in a spiced coconut gravy, making it a perfect accompaniment for rice, appam, or puttu.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups black chickpeas, soaked overnight
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 cup thick coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  2. Add chopped onions, ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Now add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook for a minute.
  5. Add the soaked black chickpeas and mix well. Pour in enough water to cover the chickpeas and add salt.
  6. Cover and cook until the chickpeas are tender.
  7. Once the chickpeas are cooked, add thick coconut milk and simmer for a few minutes.
  8. Adjust the seasoning and remove from heat.
  9. Serve hot with rice, appam, or puttu.
