Blaff (creole Fish Stew)

Ingredients

  • 4 fillets of fresh fish (such as snapper or grouper)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 scotch bonnet pepper, seeded and sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 cup of fish or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons of lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion, minced garlic, and thyme. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  3. Add the sliced scotch bonnet pepper and green bell pepper to the pot. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Pour in the fish or vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
  5. Gently add the fish fillets to the pot and let them cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Pour in the coconut milk and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Simmer for an additional 10 minutes until the fish is cooked through and the flavors have melded together.
  8. Serve the blaff hot, garnished with fresh herbs and accompanied by steamed rice or crusty bread.
